Chapter 9

“RILEY!” Taylor shouted his name, shaking him. “Wake up. Wake up now.” His face was pale, teeth gritted, his whole body tense. She shook him again, and found herself wrapped in muscular arms. He pinned her beneath him, and she stared up, horrified. Moonlight drifted in from above, giving her just enough light to see his face. His eyes were open, but they weren’t seeing her. Madness lurked there and she shivered.

His fingers gripped her, squeezed until it hurt. A hot lash of panic scored her backbone. He was trapped in some hellish nightmare and she wasn’t sure she would survive it. She managed to get her hands loose, and after a momentary hesitation, she cupped his cheeks. “Riley.” She spoke his name clearly. “You need to wake up. You need to come back to me.”

She wondered if he was even breathing, then a gasp shuddered through him. Something red flickered in his eyes and for a moment—surely some trick of the shadows—it almost appeared like his face had become that of an animal’s.

His body curled, his arms tightening into a ferocious hug, but he seemed to be cradling her, protective now. “Trix,” he murmured. “Fuck, man. They killed you. I killed you.” He threw his head back and howled his pain. “You weren’t supposed to fucking die!”

Taylor sucked in air like she was going down for the third time. “Shh, Riley. It’s a dream. Just a dream. A bad one, but a dream. Come back to me now, big guy. I need you.” And that’s when she realized she did. Need him.

His body shuddered so hard his teeth clicked together and she trembled almost as hard as she touched his cheeks, his hair, his shoulders. “I’m here, Riley. I’m right here. I’ve got you. You’re all right now.” But was he? Was she?

“They were all there, all around us in the jungle. It was dark. They weren’t supposed to be there.” He buried his face against her neck. “God, Trix. Why did you do it? So fucking dark.”

Her hand scrabbled in the dirt until her fingers fastened around the small flashlight. She pushed the button and light flared around them, chasing the dark into shadowed corners. “It’s not dark now. I’ve turned on the flashlight. We’re in the ruins, Riley. On Bermeja. We aren’t wherever you went. It’s me. Taylor. Please, Riley. Please.” She wasn’t above begging at this point.

He shook his head, vehement in his denial. “I didn’t help him. I didn’t protect him when we stumbled on the mercs. Trix came in, covering my six. Like he always covered it. Gunfire. Flashes. Could see them shooting in the dark. Trix went down. Blood. Everywhere.”

“Shh, Rye. You’re here. With me.” Taylor kissed his chin, found his mouth. Maybe she could tease him back to consciousness this way. Her lips played over his, teasing, as her tongue asked him to let her taste him. Kissing him shouldn’t be this…wonderful. She pressed against him, seeking more.

Riley released her suddenly and she fell back against the rock floor, scraping her elbows to keep from banging her head.
